Morris dancers will tour Capitol Hill on Saturday, April 9th to celebrate spring.  Spring is a traditional time for morris dancing, and Capitol Hill is a great neighborhood for a morris tour.  The tour will alternate between dance stops and pub stops.  At the dance stops the teams will put on a show by alternating dances.  The pub stops are for relaxing with a pint, fellowship and sometimes singing.

The Morris

Morris dancing is a living tradition of dance and music, ancient in its origins and passed down from father to son for generations.  The tradition comes from England, and most surviving dances are from the Cotswolds west of London.  The origins are unclear but even in the fifteenth century, morris dancing was considered and old custom.  The Morris is mentioned in several of Shakespeare's plays and one of his actors, Will Kemp(e), was a "Maurice dauncer".  In one village, Bampton in Oxfordshire, it is said the team has danced each spring for four hundred years.

The tunes currently played for the morris date from eighteenth century folk song literature.  The most prevalent instruments now used are the concertina, accordian, and fiddle.  The details of the step and arm movement show the village in England from which an individual dance originates.
